Your air conditioner can produce a gentle hum as the fan blows air or a click as it starts and completes a cycle. These sounds are normal and are no cause for concern. However, if you hear any of the following three AC noises coming from the system in your Corydon, IN home, it’s vital to schedule repair services with a professional.
1. Banging Noises
Air conditioners have a compressor that circulates the refrigerant throughout the system. Sometimes, you may notice loud banging sounds in the outdoor unit that houses the compressor. This happens when loose components, such as the connecting rod, bang on the casing when the system is operating.
If the banging noises are within the indoor unit, it may be because of issues with the blower. The fan blades may be out of proper alignment or loose and will bang on other interior components while in operation.
It’s important to fix the issue before loose parts cause extensive damage to the other components. To prevent these issues, an HVAC technician can fix loose components during an annual maintenance appointment.
2. Loud Whistling
Whistling sounds often result from blocked airflow in one of the air conditioner components. ACs have return vents and ducts that move the indoor air back to the system for cooling. The supply vents and ducts distribute conditioned air throughout your home.
When there is poor airflow in the return ducts, the air conditioner uses more energy to pull the air back into the system. This creates high pressure, leading to the whistling sounds.
3. Hissing Sounds
Air conditioners have evaporator and condenser coils that house the refrigerant. When cooling your home, the refrigerant absorbs the heat from warm indoor air and moves it to the outdoor unit. Here, the compressor compresses it into high pressure.
If the refrigerant is leaking, it escapes through cracks or pinholes within the coils. Since it’s in gas form and under high pressure, it makes a hissing sound as it leaves the system.
